C'est à l'aide de statistiques et d'études de cas que cet article essaye d'identifier les raisons de cette différence. L'une des premières tient au fait que les séparations entre époux sont rares, car le divorce légal n'existe pas et les pressions religieuses et morales sont très fortes. De plus comme le fait de vivre sans l'aide d'un homme augmente l'exclusion sociale, lorsque une femme se retrouve seule avec ses enfants, elle choisit généralement d'aller vivre chez des parents agés, afin de cacher le plus possible sa situation. Dans le même temps, on relève des variations dans les familles monoparentales selon la profession, les ouvrières étant plus souvent touchées que les autres. LLes etudes realisees au Mexique, au Costa Rica et aux Philippines s'inscrivent en opposition a l'opinion repandue dans sa generalisation, un examen des caracteristiques internes des familles permet mieux de comprendre cette vulnerabilite.
