Des sociologues chiliens evoquent le cas des villes d'Amerique Latine, et attribuent ces evolutions aux circonstances particulieres du sous continent (transition democratique) ainsi qu'aux circonstances globales de la mondialisation et de l'ajustement qui en decoule. Un sociologue sud africain explique l'influence de l'apartheid sur le developpement particulier des villes de son pays. La pauperisation de masse attire l'attention : 1) sur le role du territoire dans la mise en oeuvre de nouvelles politiques en faveur des plus demunis (a partir d'etudes de cas en Afrique et au Mexique), 2) sur l'importance sociale de l'action des groupes pour reduire la pauvrete (etude de cas au Bresil). La nouvelle participation de la societe civile a la gestion urbaine est analysee, a partir du cas de Recife (Bresil). Sont aussi abordes l'importance de la ville dans les relations commerciales, les problemes d'environnement et d'ecologie dans la ville, l'emergence de la violence, latente, ou declaree (cas de Brazzaville en 1993) (REGARDS-CNRS-DF).
