La theorie neoclassique est contestee par une theorie revelant la lutte des classes et la proletarisation des paysans et des travailleurs enroles de force.. "En effet, le systeme de recrutement de la main-d'oeuvre, la charge de travail et la discipline imposee, le manque de liberte sont des caracteristiques du travail dans les plantations qu'on retrouve en Indochine, a Java, en Malaisie, en Inde, au Sri Lanka, aux iles Fidji ; mais le discours des elites coloniales etait empreint de contradictions : reputes pour se complaire dans l'immobilisme, les paysans ont manifeste une adaptation a la migration professionnelle (forcee) et une capacite de resistance qui sont incompatibles avec le schema. Il en est resulte un sentiment d'identite "fracture" de la classe paysanne. De plus, l'ideologie coloniale ne permettait meme pas la reproduction physique de la force de travail qui lui etait necessaire. Dans un seul pays, les Philippines, l'ancrage social et politique du capitalisme colonial a ete marque, car les plantations et les usines de raffinage du sucre etaient proprietes des autochtones ; mais depuis l'independance du pays en 1946, le systeme a abouti a la stagnation : industrie inefficace et societe inegalitaire (REGARDS-CNRS-DF).
